Iraq has fallen into disorder. Militants are taking over large regions. The work that American soldiers did there has come undone.
This is remarkably similar to the history of Viet Nam. In 1975, three years after the U.S. left, the communist North took over the South. Our peace treaty was undone. And the recent record of Iraq shows that we learned nothing from Viet Nam.
This is the lie behind George W. Bush’s claim that he would bring democracy to Iraq, the folly behind the Arab Spring, and the tragedy of Tiananmen Square. You cannot go into an ancient culture, and validly demand that it modernize overnight.
