The tearing down of the Berlin Wall, occurring when I was in law school, was a major event.  Some people stupidly called it the end of history.  But history didn’t stop.  It remained in motion.

Today the right wing is intent on ridiculing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  I don’t buy the socialism that Rep. Cortez espouses.  I remember too well the general stagnation in Eastern Europe that led to the Wall’s collapse.

But we must keep in mind that Americans under thirty-five have only seen unfettered capitalism.  They’ve witnessed on a day-to-day basis the economic hardship that has beset everyone but the favored few.

The philosopher Hegel said that the only thing we learn from history is that governments learn nothing from history.
